What we know colloquially as killing the nerve

It is the procedure by which we remove the inflamed or infected pulp tissue from the tooth and later fill it with a biocompatible material.

We call pulp tissue or pulp the soft connective tissue rich in blood vessels and nerves that are within the complex system of canals of the tooth, and that communicates it with the alveolar bone. The function of the pulp, in addition to helping to form the tooth, is to perceive external stimuli.

Endodoncia

The pulp tissue is found in the innermost part of the tooth, it is affected by very deep caries or by trauma. Cavities are normally solved by filling the tooth, but if it is not treated, the passage of time causes it to affect the pulp and it is necessary to perform endodontics to save the piece.

Tooth filling is a simpler procedure, which is why we recommend that you go to the dentist in case of any symptom you notice in the tooth, to treat the problem as soon as possible.

purpose

The objective of this treatment is to preserve the teeth with a poor prognosis, since if we did not treat it, there would be no choice but to extract it.

It is one of the most common treatments in dentistry, since by doing it we avoid the loss of a piece, and with it the aesthetics and functionality.

Signs and symptoms

How do we perform endodontics?

Does killing the nerve hurt?

As we have explained previously, the endodontic procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so no pain is perceived during it.

As the tissues surrounding the tooth become inflamed, pain may develop when the anesthesia wears off and may last for several days. The dentist will prescribe the necessary medication to alleviate it.
