Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by the interruption of breathing while sleeping. The duration of these interruptions can vary from a few seconds to minutes and can occur more than 30 times per hour.
The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which occurs when the muscles in the throat relax and the airways narrow or close during sleep.
Generally, people who suffer from apnea are not aware of it, being the people with whom they share a room who perceive it.
One sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring, but not everyone who snores has apnea.
There are three possible treatments for sleep apnea:
It consists of a device that generates air pressure that is transmitted through a tube to a mask that fits over the nose, or sometimes over the nose and mouth, thus overcoming the closure of the airway and avoiding respiratory pauses.
